The use of low poly art comes from the early days of 3D animation. Mocking up 3D scenes using a low polygonal resolution helped to reduce render times, which greatly sped up the development process of video games and animated movies. Do you remember Mario looking like this image (this was 20 years ago)? Technology has advanced and you can't see the 3D modeling, unless it has a retro look. This retro, low-polygonal look is a popular trend with graphic designers, illustrators and artists.
In this lesson you will use the low-polygonal look as inspiration for a black and white photograph. In Photoshop you will use the POLYGONAL TOOL, FILTER > BLUR > AVERAGE TOOL and the shortcut CMD+ CTRL + F to turn a photograph into low polygonal art. You will also learn to use the OBJECT SELECTION TOOLS to select a small portion of the photograph to be in color, while the rest of the photo is converted to black and white. |
