Double Exposure
Double exposure is a technique that layers two different exposures or photographs on a single image, combining them into one. Double exposure creates a surreal feeling to your photos and the two photographs can work together to convey deep meaning or symbolism. A similar technique, called a “multiple exposure,” is when you combine more than two exposures in a single image.
Instructions
BLEND MODE TECHNIQUE
In order to create this double exposure effect you will need one of your black and white photographs, and one color photograph of your choice. Pexels.com is an excellent site to find high quality photographs.
1. Open Photoshop.
2. Open your black and white photo by selecting FILE > OPEN, find your photo, then select OPEN.
3. Place a color photograph on top of the black and white photo. One way to do this is go to FILE > PLACE EMBEDDED, find your color photo, then select OPEN.
4. Both photos should be the same size. Stretch or resize one of the photos to match the other photo.
5. Next you will change the BLENDING MODES in the LAYERS PALETTE. Look at the image below and find the word NORMAL. This is the blending modes option. NORMAL is the default option. Before you change the blending mode, make sure the top layer (the color photo) is selected.

7. Save your image as a JPEG once you find a blending mode that creates an effect you like. Go to FILE > SAVE AS > rename the photo so you do not alter the original photo, ie, double1, then select DOWNLOADS or DOCUMENTS under the WHERE option. Under FORMAT select JPEG, then SAVE and click OK.

4. On the black and white photo, go to SELECT>COLOR RANGE.
5. In this techniques you have three options to choose from. Use only one, either HIGHLIGHTS, MIDTONES, or SHADOWS. In the image to the left, MIDTONES has been selected.
6. You should see the marching ants outline on your image. 7. Now, select your colored image. You need to select and copy it by pressing, CMD A and CMD C. 8. Go back to the B&W image. 9. Select EDIT>PASTE SPECIAL>PASTE INTO. This will paste your colored image into the marching ants selection. 10. Resize and move the colored image in order to have the colored image show through the marching ants selection. |
